EPL Rivals Consider Suing Everton
Everton are currently in the dogbox with their English Premier League (EPL) rivals, who are threatening to sue the Toffees if they avoid relegation this season.
An international publication revealed on Tuesday, 16 May, that Southampton, Leicester City, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and Burnley informed the EPL that they believe they’re entitled to compensation if the Toffees are found guilty of breaching spending rules.
In March, Everton were charged by the EPL authorities for breaching their financial fair play rules, as the club has posted an astonishing loss of £372 million over the past three years – an amount well above the £105 million limit over the same time period.
While financial losses were expected during the coronavirus pandemic period, this is well outside the predicted amount. A disciplinary hearing will be held later this year, at a date still to be determined.
The five aforementioned clubs reportedly applied to have the tribunal moved forward so that any resulting sanctions could be implemented before the close of the 2022-2023 season. The appointed commission in charge of the case rejected the application, prompting the rival clubs to demand financial compensation in return.
Everton are currently sitting in a precarious position on the EPL table, in 17th place with only 32 points, a point away from relegation.
